What is a smart identifier?
A smart identifier is a pre-defined regular expression used to locate specific content in an email, such as a Credit Card number or Drivers License Number.

Creating a filter for Smart identifier
Follow these steps in creating a general smart Identifier filter.
- Navigate to Company Settings > Filters.
- Click New Filter.
- Enter an appropriate Filter Name.
- From the Direction dropdown, select the appropriate option.
- Click Continue.
- Select the desired Scope from the dropdown.
- From the If dropdown, select Smart Identifier Scan.
- Click Manage.
- From the pop-up, select the Smart Identifiers that you wish to scan for. Multiple items may be chosen.
- Click Close.
- From the Do dropdown, select the desired action.
- Click Save.
Best Practice:
Where possible, a dictionary should be used in conjunction with a corresponding smart identifier. EX: SSN Dictionary with SSN smart ID. Also, each filter should be separate, not in one large filter.
Reduce False positives for DLP
A smart identifier is best paired with a dictionary to add the complexity of finding two related items, instead of scanning for one.
Encryption with DLP
Encryption is only available if the scope is set for Outbound.
